Anthropic positions Fable 5 for ambitious coding, research, and knowledge workflows that can run for hours or even days.

Claude Fable 5 targets long-running, complex AI work

Anthropic introduced Claude Fable 5 as its most capable generally available model for long-running knowledge work and software development. It is intended for tasks that go beyond a single answer or code change.

Agentic work over longer periods

Anthropic says Fable 5 can plan across stages, perform subtasks, and verify its own work. Examples include large migrations, complex implementations, research, and document-heavy workflows.

Not every problem needs the largest model

That capability comes at a price. Anthropic lists API pricing of 10 dollars per million input tokens and 50 dollars per million output tokens. A smaller, faster model will often remain the sensible choice for everyday tasks. Product decisions should balance quality, speed, risk, and cost rather than selecting maximum intelligence by default.

What does this mean for product teams?

Long-running agents enable new workflows, but they need clear boundaries, logging, checkpoints, and human approval at important moments. Fable 5 primarily shows that AI can take on a more operational role-provided the direction is designed well.
